AI Ads, Gemini's Takeover, and What It Means for Your Business

AI Ads, Gemini's Takeover, and What It Means for Your Business

Grab your coffee. Here's what actually happened this week that's worth your time, and what each thing means for your business without the jargon.

You can now run ads inside ChatGPT across Europe

OpenAI just opened up self-service ChatGPT Ads to 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. As of August 31, you can set up campaigns yourself through its Ads Manager instead of waiting on a sales rep. OpenAI says tens of thousands of marketers have already advertised on ChatGPT, and the ad business is reportedly running at around a billion dollars a year.

Why you should care: people are starting to ask ChatGPT the same questions they used to type into Google. Things like "what's a good gift for a coffee lover" or "which accountant should I hire near me". A fresh place to show up in front of buyers is a big deal, especially early, when it's cheaper and less crowded. You don't have to jump in tomorrow. But it's worth a look if your customers are the kind who chat with AI before they buy.

Google Assistant goes away tomorrow, and Gemini takes over

Starting September 4, Google begins fully replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, and compatible headphones. Once the switch reaches a device, there's no going back to the old Assistant, and the rollout takes a few weeks to hit everyone. Smart speakers, smart displays, and built-in car systems are not part of this particular cutover.

So what does that mean for you? More of your customers will be talking to an AI that hands back one answer instead of a page of blue links. If someone asks Gemini for "the best pizza place open right now", you want to be that answer, not buried on page two. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate, your hours current, your reviews fresh, and your website clear about what you sell and where. The businesses that get named in AI answers are the ones with clean, consistent info in every spot.

Google is retiring Display ads and folding them into Demand Gen

If you run Google Ads, put this one on your radar. Google is phasing out the classic Display campaign later this year, and those ads will now live inside Demand Gen campaigns instead. The good news is that Google made the switch fairly painless, you are not required to use YouTube placements, and the "similar audiences" option is coming back for prospecting.

Plain version: your banner and image ads are not disappearing, they are just moving into a newer campaign type that leans harder on Google's automation. Log into your account, see which campaigns are affected, and give yourself time to learn the new setup before it becomes the only option. Don't wait for the deadline to figure it out.

Google rolled out its August Spam Update worldwide

Google finished pushing out its August 2026 Spam Update. It went live in the middle of the month, hit every language and every country, and targets low-quality, spammy content. No new rules were announced. It's just Google enforcing what it already had on the books.

If your rankings dipped or jumped lately, this could be why. The fix is the same plain advice that keeps working: write for actual humans, answer real questions, and don't stuff pages with junk to game the system. If you've been publishing thin, AI-spun articles just to have something on the blog, treat this as your nudge to slow down and make fewer, better pages.

One more small thing worth knowing: Google Search Console now shows views from third-party places like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, so you can get a fuller picture of where your content is actually getting seen.

Google's new "Nano Banana" image tool is a gift for small teams

Google released Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, nicknamed "Nano Banana," and plenty of people are calling it one of the best AI image editors available right now. You describe the edit you want in plain words, and it handles the rest.

For a small business, this is the kind of tool that quietly saves you real money. Swap a product background, touch up a photo for a seasonal promo, or make a clean graphic for a post, all without hiring a designer for every little thing. Keep a human eye on the final result so it still looks like you, but this puts decent visuals within reach of a one-person marketing team.

The takeaway

Two threads run through all of this. AI is becoming the front door to how people find and pick businesses, and the ad world is shifting fast to keep up. You don't need to chase every shiny thing. Keep your business info clean and consistent, test one new channel when you have the breathing room, and spend your energy on being genuinely useful to the people you serve. That's the part that keeps paying off no matter which tool wins this month.
